Heavy bleeding

Awaiting clinical review

Heavy bleeding affects many women and is treatable. Soaking a pad every hour for several hours needs urgent attention.

Signs of heavy bleeding include changing pads every 1–2 hours, passing large clots, bleeding through clothes, or periods longer than 7 days.

Heavy periods can lead to low iron (anaemia), causing tiredness and breathlessness.

When to seek medical assessment

  • Soaking a pad or tampon every hour for 2+ hours — seek urgent care.
  • Feeling dizzy, faint or very tired.

Practical next steps

  • Record flow as heavy when it is.
  • Note clots and how often you change protection.
